Glossary of Research and Other Fibromyalgia Terms and Definitions
Scientific words and phrases can be difficult to understand for those outside of the scientific or medical community. Check this area for words commonly used in medical literature or oral presentations related to fibromyalgia. A better understanding of the terminology used by researchers and clinicians can help you make sense of information that might be beneficial in your treatment and, ultimately, to your quality of life.
Acetamininophen - A type of pain reliever that does not contain aspirin and does not need a prescription.
Acupressure -The application of pressure (as with the thumbs or fingertips) to the same discrete points on the body stimulated in acupuncture; used for therapeutic effects (as the relief of tension or pain).
Acupuncture - The ancient Chinese practice of inserting fine needles through the skin at specific points especially to cure disease or relieve pain.
Adherence -(Same as Compliance) How well the patient adheres to an agreed treatment plan.
Adverse Events - Negative side effects of a treatment.
Allodynia - A condition in which you have a painful reaction to a stimulus, such as a light touch on your skin, when you shouldn’t.
Alternative Medicine - Any of various systems of healing or treating disease (as homeopathy, chiropractic, naturopathy, Ayurveda, or faith healing) that are not included in the traditional curricula taught in medical schools of the United States and Britain.
American College of Rhrumatology (ACR) - The official organization for health-care professionals who treat arthritis and other rheumatic diseases. This organization established the criteria for diagnosing fibromyalgia.
Analgesic - A drug that helps reduce or eliminate the perception of pain.
Antidepressant - A prescription medication that is prescribed to relieve moodiness and depression. Some antidepressants can also promote sleep and help relieve pain.
Anti-Tumour NECROSIS FACTOR TNF is a chemical made by the body’s immune system. When it is made in the joints it causes the process of inflammation and joint damage, as in rheumatoid arthritis. It was first discovered many years ago in experiments on cancer, where it was found to cause cancer cells to die, and so it was called Tumour Necrosis (i.e. the death of a piece of bone or tissue) Factor.

Published: June 20, 2008 05:11 am PrintThis
Brothers make 1,200 mile voyage on WaveRunners
By Stephen Tait
NEWBURYPORT — When Bill Casey pulled up to docks at the Windward Yacht Yard after a 1,600-mile personal watercraft journey, his mother, Charlotte, was waiting.
“Well that’s a ride you’re never going to forget,” the 88-year-old mother said to her 52-year-old son.
“Nope,” Bill responded, dripping wet in a survival suit and black Ipswich YMCA ball cap. “That’s for sure.”
Bill Casey of Ipswich and his brother, Joe, 54, of Newburyport, left 11 days ago from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on two silver Yamaha WaveRunners and started heading north. They traveled at times up to 65 mph for an average of about 145 miles a day, were stopped several times by nautical law enforcement and encountered countless numbers of sea creatures.
When they arrived back on the North Shore yesterday, they received a hero’s welcome — bottles of champagne, roses, long-sleeved T-shirts and other gifts — not for their physical feat but rather for the reason behind the ride: an effort that raised more than $16,000 for the Ipswich YMCA.
Gerry Beauchamp, the executive director of the Ipswich Y, was perhaps the most excited person of the more than 20 who crowded the docks to welcome the brothers home.
“I’m totally impressed,” Beauchamp said. “I’m just not sure what we are going to do to top this fundraiser.”
Growing up in Beverly, the brothers loved the water and learned to swim as children by attending swimming class at the local Y. They said they saw this as an opportunity to give back to the organization that played such an important role in their childhood.
Bill’s wife, Pam, said the brothers broke the $16,000 mark, and “donations are still coming in.”

For supper, I was eating humble pie.
It all began that morning. One of my three-year-old daughter’s favorite pastimes is to visit the duck pond in Middleburg and interact with the waterfowl. The weather was beautiful on Friday. The bread ends and stale hotdog buns were taking over one shelf in our pantry.
At the pond, the ducks and geese greeted us with open beaks … to be exact, 63 open beaks — from big ones (Canada geese) to small ones (baby Mallard ducks). It was as if my daughter and I were mobbed by some waterfowl version of the paparazzi. Even a few large carp decided to join in the hunt for stray bread crumbs.
Throughout this barrage of feathers and webbed feet, my daughter was in her own little world. She talked to the ducks as if they were her best friends. She would squat down near a duck, drop a few bread crumbs, and then coach the bird through its meal. When a duck waddled over and missed out on a flying hoagie roll or piece of whole wheat, my daughter made sure it didn’t feel left out for long.
Her interactions with the birds were priceless. A goose honked. A duck quacked. My daughter giggled. I laughed. Sharing a moment on a beautiful day in the outdoors. It was a neat experience, and I decided to write a small column about it Friday night as I was putting together the Outdoors section and needed one more story to fill out the page.

We’re lucky in TIMESland. The vicious storms that have been striking Wisconsin and Upper Michigan have so far missed us. Oops! Better not say that too loud o old Ma Nature will hear and put us on the hit list.
Other than that, we’ve had a few hours of Summer here and there, but certainly not enough to complain about. Plenty of rain though. Since we’ve had the rain but not the flooding crops should be wonderful.
In the old days Dad would predict a good corn crop if it was knee high by the Fourth of July. Everybody in our family was quite short, so I guess we had good crops more often than other families. Of course, Dad never did say knee high on who? At any rate, noticed that by the first week in June corn in a neighbor’s field was already knee high on me, so he should expect a really good harvest, unless of course it freezes on one of these chilly nights.
The moon this week is full and beautiful. Certainly the perfect time for weddings and romance!
Speaking of June weddings, here are two bits of advice:
Some marriages may be made in Heaven, but they all have to be maintained on Earth.
A successful marriage isn’t about finding the right person, it’s about being the right person.
High prices for gasoline and household fuels equal hard times for most of us country dwellers, and it appears things could get worse, although the gas pumps showed a slight price drop this week.
Unless things change there are predictions propane could reach $4 a gallon by fall.
Joanne Unger, a retired construction worker living in the Wausaukee area, wonders how she is supposed to heat her house this winter. She says already to pare expenses she goes nowhere and gets groceries once a month. She said the cutoff for fuel assistance is $1,199 a month for a single person, but it will cost her $4,000 to fill her empty propane tank. That’s more than two months of Social Security and pensions. Costs the same to heat a house for one as for two, but that doesn’t seem to matter to the rule makers. Maybe they expect us all to take room mates. Or just mates.

Kingston frontenacs forward nathan moon knows the feeling he will have tomorrow at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa will be worth the years of waiting.
It’s draft day for future National Hockey League players and Moon is one keyed-up participant.
“It’s a dream come true for me,” said Moon from his family home in Belleville earlier this week. “This is something I’ve been waiting for my whole life. Now it’s coming. I can’t wait for [tomorrow].
“Just to hear my name called will be a thrill.”
Based on pre-draft conversations with several teams, the 18-year-old centre thinks he will be selected sometime tomorrow on the second day of the draft proceedings. The first round is tonight; rounds 2 through 7 are tomorrow.
“Anywhere from the second to the seventh round it could happen, I guess. Maybe later. I don’t really care when,” said Moon, ticking off Boston, Calgary and Los Angeles as clubs that have talked to his agent, Larry Kelly of Ottawa.
“There’s a fair bunch that have talked to him. It’s at the wait-and-see stage now,” Moon said.
Moon’s draft status, like that of his linemates, Josh Brittain and Robert Mignardi, shot up during the second half of the OHL season. Moon, the possible heir apparent as Kingston’s captain for the 2008-09 season, scored 22 of his 35 goals in the second half. He finished with 79 points and his 48 goals over his first two OHL seasons are the most by a Kingston forward since the Stewart brothers - Anthony and Chris - both scored more than 50.
The five-foot-11, 190-pound Moon found the NHL Prospects Combine in Toronto earlier this month “an eye-opening” experience.
“It was really intense but a lot of fun, too,” he said. “They push you to the limit to see how hard you can go. The whole process of going through all the interviews with the scouts, you have to react to the questions. You just have to be honest with them.”

Gay `Shotgun Weddings' Beat Proposed California Ban (Update1)
By William Selway
June 16 (Bloomberg) — Joshua Rymer says he's having a shotgun wedding, though no children are on the way.
He plans to marry Timothy Frazer before Nov. 2, when Californians will vote on a constitutional amendment to ban same- sex marriages. The measure would overturn a state Supreme Court decision that today makes California the second U.S. state to allow homosexual couples to wed.
“We want to make sure we take advantage of it before there is any possibility that privilege or right is taken away,'' said Rymer, 51, chief executive officer of Terradatum Inc., a real- estate software company in Glen Ellen, California.
California officials are bracing for a wave of nuptials from couples taking advantage of the ruling, which became effective at 5:01 p.m. local time today.
San Francisco married one couple this evening, Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin, who had been plaintiffs in the lawsuit that led to the Supreme Court decision. Hundreds of supporters cheered and waved as Lyon and Martin emerged from Mayor Gavin Newsom's office. Outside City Hall, a marching band was playing and at least 1,000 more people gathered to support the couple. About a dozen protesters picketed, carrying signs with religious themes and anti-homosexual messages.
Los Angeles County this evening married Robin Tyler and Diane Olson, who sued after their request to wed in 2004 was denied.
Sonoma, Alameda and Yolo counties extended their hours so they could issue licenses tonight. The rest of the state will start tomorrow.
“We're preparing for several hundred couples on Tuesday, possibly up to the thousands,'' said Dean Logan, the Los Angeles County Clerk.
Advocates of amending the state constitution say the California Supreme Court ignored the will of the 61 percent of voters who in 2000 approved a measure to limit marriage to same- sex couples.

In Leviticus, the very heart of the Torah, Yahweh details seven called out assemblies called Miqra. These Festivals begin in the spring with Passover, Unleavened Bread, and First Fruits. These are followed fifty days later by the celebratory Miqra of Seven Sevens, referred to as "Weeks."
The first four festivals were fulfilled, played out in human history by the Messiah. Yahushua's enactment of Passover occurred on Nisan 14, 4000, which was Friday, April 1, 33 CE on our pagan calendar. He fulfilled the promises in Unleavened Bread the following day on Nisan 15, 4000, which we know as the Sabbath of April 2
, 33 CE. And Yahshua rose on FirstFruits. That was Nisan 16, 4000 on Yahuweh's calendar and the first day of the week, April 3
, 33 CE, when the Spirit came upon the ekklesia/out-calling.
Taruwah, often called "Trumpets," is the first of three Miqra that have not yet been fulfilled. Yahweh's fall festivals coincide with the fall of man. Taruwah, which means to "shout for joy" and "to signal an alarm," is prophetic of the harvest of souls known as the "rapture." This Miqra is followed by Yom Kippur, or the Day of Atonement, which signifies Yahushua's awesome return to earth in the waning and terrible days of the Tribulation. Five days later, on the Miqra of Tabernacles, God will establish paradise on earth, ushering in the Millennial Sabbath by camping out with His creation for one thousand years.
Since these Miqra are yet unfulfilled, before we examine any of them in the context of the Torah, let's first look at what the Renewed Covenant has to say about their relevance. One of the more interesting discussions regarding Yahuweh's Feasts occurs in Paul's letter to the Colossians. The passage, and the context in which it resides, is one of the most misunderstood in Scripture. It includes a verse which has been errantly rendered to suggest that all of God resided bodily in the Messiah - a logical and physical impossibility. All of God won't fit anywhere. If Yahshua represented the undiminished totality of God, His physical presence would have instantly incinerated all life on earth and obliterated our planet, solar system, and galaxy.

Matt Cohler, one of Facebook’s earliest hires, is leaving the Palo Alto social-networking startup for a job at a Silicon Valley venture capital firm.
Facebook made the announcement Thursday. Cohler, vice president of product management at Facebook, will join Benchmark Capital as a general partner in the fall. But he’ll stay in touch with Facebook as a special adviser to Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg and the senior management team.
The 31-year-old executive already has a packed resume: He was a founding member of LinkedIn, the Mountain View social network recently valued at $1 billion; served as a consultant for McKinsey; and worked in Beijing at AsiaInfo Holdings Inc., a telecom company that helped build China’s Internet infrastructure.
Said Zuckerberg in a statement: Cohler “has been an important contributor to Facebook’s growth and success.”
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, which most famously sponsored the early research behind the Internet, has lit a fire under robotics in recent years by sponsoring a series of driverless car races meant to develop crash-avoidance sensors and software.
Now, two of DARPA’s champion robo-cars are back in the news. General Motors Corp. said Thursday that it will invest $5 million in a five-year joint research project with Carnegie Mellon University, whose “Boss” robo-car won a race held last year in a citylike setting.
“Imagine being virtually chauffeured in your car while doing your e-mail, eating breakfast and watching the news,” GM Vice President for Research Larry Burns said in a statement. “The work we’re doing with Carnegie Mellon is a big stepping stone toward making this a reality.”
Stanford University’s “Stanley” - the robo-car that won a 2005 sprint across the Mojave Desert - is making a monthlong pit stop at the Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose before going on display at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
