Have to be absolutely thrilled with Smoak. The Rangers are going to be dangerous in a couple of seasons.
Agreed, Cory. This is a tremendous day for the Texas Rangers organization.
Immediate questions: With first base now completely solved by the introduction of Smoak into the fold, does Chris Davis remain at first base or move back across the diamond to third? Does he have the range and quickness to handle the position?
And with Max Ramirez now almost certainly remaining behind the plate, who is the last man (or men) standing between Saltalamacchia, MaxRam and Teagarden?
This is awesome. Better than I could have even dreamed.
According to AJM over at Lone Star Ball, this does nothing to alter the current 1B/DH plan, at least not yet.
If it does, my guess is that Chris Davis would move to the OF, not back to third base, or that Max Ramirez would wind up traded due to his lack of a position. But at this point, I don’t think it’s something you can go predicting - Smoak/Davis/Max is a nice problem to have re: 1B/DH, but we’re not quite there yet.
Or maybe they trade Milton at the deadline and use Max @ DH, Davis @ 3B/OF, and Smoak @ 1B
Not that I’m suggesting they do that…. MB has been great as JH’s protection…
Robert Ross in the second round looks like a good choice to me.
They just took one Tomothy Murphy out of UCLA in round 3, too… a lefty with a decent four-pitch arsenal, but also with some mechanical and control issues, according to MLB.com.
Saw Adam’s remarks on LSB, Jon - curious, since Evan Grant was the one to first submit that possibility.
Ross strikes me as Kiker-lite off-hand. Murphy could move fast.
