I still think even evil people deserve a quick and painless death. Human rights and all that. Even Hitler got to go quickly.

I respect your attempt to begin an intelligent discussion on this topic, so to respond:The biggest issue here, to me, comes from the question of “Is Chris Hanson acting as an agent of the police?” He is effectively conducting an interrogation, from which any and all statements can and will be used against the accused in their trial. Yet the accused are not given an opportunity to phone a lawyer, or even informed of whether they have a right to one. Especially in the early episodes of this show, many of the people who showed up at the “Sting house” assumed they were being confronted by an angry parent - not a journalist with hidden cameras and police waiting outside to arrest him.2 & 3. They do explain the evidence against the accused, but do a very poor job with respect towards our system of “Innocent until proven guilty.” By televising these confrontations BEFORE any due process of law takes place, they are tainting a potential jury pool whose job it is to decide the guilt or innocence of each person on a case-by-case basis. We do not know how much these interviews are edited to portray the accused as guilty. And simply appearing on this show implies you are guilty. Not to mention the fact that televising their names, home towns and other facts about the accused in many ways can be viewed as an invitation for retaliation against them by the viewing public.4 . Reading the article, it is important to realize that this is a Civil Suit (not criminal charges) being brought against NBC. There is likely a standard of proof defined in the law (the article even says that some of the charges, such as “Intentional infliction of emotional distress” has a very high bar of proof. It is up to the jury in that case to decide NBC’s responsibility in this case. Much as it should be up to a jury, and not NBC, to decide an accused predator’s guilt or innocence.

Here is a detailed account of what happened on that day.

  4. Amos says on :

No, I do not believe they want to participate, but I also do not believe that they are forced to sit and speak on camera.

  5. William says on :

Gotcha. It seems likely that this man had either done this before or was well on his way to doing it in the near future.I don’t get the outrage at NBC/Catch a Predator for outing someone that is doing this.

  6. Loreen says on :

This is america. This is hollywood. This is the young generation of screwed up americans.Thats why I no longer watch dateline, which should be renamed ’smutline’.I watch foreign tv and movies, which are still untainted, for the most part….but I’m sure that will change, with the profit influence of whorelywood…

  7. Ernestine says on :

You’re from Collin County.I’m not psychic. Out of the many tapings done, this is the only DA’s office that has refused to press charges, even so the same procedures have been consistently followed across taping, and the same level of evidence has been met.You might get a kick out of the fact that one of the suspects in Murphy, Jose Guevara, ended up being prosecuted and successfully convicted, by the very same DA’s office who claimed it was impossible. It seems to me like there’s something interesting going on in your DA’s office.

  8. Lotus says on :

i dunno. didn’t they bring a swat team? that kinda seems physically threatening.

  9. Alec says on :

Because when it comes to pedophilia you are guilty and never innocent in the eyes of the nation.

  10. Joy says on :

I do not find this kind of thing entertaining but these people are pedophiles - they know they are breaking the law and they must expect to get caught and put in the papers at least? Being on TV is much worse but if your trying to lure little kids into sex things can only ever end badly for you.I still think the show is over the top in it’s methods but it is hard to feel more than a basic human to human sympathy to these people who are usually potential child molesters.

  11. Josepha says on :

Yes. Didn’t you know that NOT having sex with a child is illegal?

  12. Ranulph says on :

Exactly. It’s like putting an alcoholic in a wine cellar, and then forcing him to drive.

  13. Caedmon says on :

While I have minor issues with a man who solicited underage boys for sex being exploited on television before he has been convicted by a jury. Him murdering innocent news reporters and police officers by shooting them in the head on live television is neither ironic, nor entertaining.

  14. Cal says on :

I’ll live to see you eat that contract. But I hope you leave enough room for my fist, because I’m going to ram it into your stomach and break your god damned spine.
