Thiago Alves’ Next Fight for the UFC Welterweight Championship? Don’t Be So Sure…
Is Thiago actually next in line for a shot at the winner of Fitch vs. GSP/Serra?
It was reported yesterday that Thiago “Pitbull” Alves was now considered the #2 Contender in the UFC’s 170-pound division and would be facing the winner of Jon Fitch’s scheduled bout against either Georges St. Pierre or Matt Serra (depending on who emerges victorious at UFC 83). This news was based on an interview Alves gave with a MMA radio show.
However, a source attached to American Top Team, world-class MMA training center and home to Thiago Alves, has informed 411Mania that the camp is unsure as to whether or not Alves will actually have a fight prior to facing the eventual undisputed UFC Welterweight Champion or if he will be given a direct route to the belt. Continuing, he stated, “In any event, Thiago is anxious to prove he is the best in the division, and looks forward to fighting for the title when the opportunity arises.”
If Alves does indeed enter the Octagon prior to vying for the UFC Welterweight Championship, some potential opponents could be Diego Sanchez, Marcus Davis, Chris Lytle, or #1 Contender Jon Fitch’s American Kickboxing Academy teammates Josh Koscheck and Mike Swick.
