Viewer Comments On Illinois Earthquake

earthquake illinois

I was in bed and had my alarm set for 4:45. I woke up to my bed shaking back and forth. My immediate response was to look outside to see if there was a tornado and there was nothing and I quickly jumped out of bed and realized things were still shaking. I even felt my bed again and it was moving. Then it was over but I was frazzled. Afterwards I was thinking that it could have been an earthquake since my dad told me about one in 1968 and I know that there is a major fault line nearby. I also thought I was going crazy and that I was still half asleep but I wasn’t. I will never forget that feeling of waking up and things are moving that shouldn’t.
I was in bed, asleep, when I woke up and felt that the bed was shaking. I was groggy and thought that it might have been an earthquake, but it didn’t seem to have the excitement of what you think about when you think ‘earthquake’. After a few minutes, the bed stopped rocking back and forth and I went back to sleep. –Christine
I was sleeping in my bedroom and it was around 4:30 AM. I had to wake up because of the sound of my bed and my lamp. My bed was shaking and the lampshade was moving. I initially thought it was my husband fooling around but he woke up right after i did. We were curious and even a little scared that Chicago can be a part of earthquake zone. –Susan Lee
I awoke and arose, as always, at 4:30 A.M. I was sitting around in the “privy” when I thought I was having a vertigo spell. Then I heard the pictures on the wall in the hallway rattling and a sound almost like a distant freight train. I thought to myself,”that train must really be loaded down” and travelling pretty fast. Coming out of the room, I noticed that my ceiling fans and lights were swaying back and forth. Then everything stopped and all was normal again. By this time it was 4:42 A.M. I said to myself “that had to have been an earthquake or at the very least an earth tremor”. Watching your news program, I was made aware of the reality of an earthquake in downstate IL. An exciting, yet apprehensive, way to start the day. Please do not use my last name if you air my comment(s).

I actually slept right through it. I got a text message from someone this morning about it and had no idea so I checked the USGS website. I am kind of sad that I slept through it.

Downgraded to 5.2 according to the USGS. Still a pretty nice couple of shakes in Indianapolis.

It woke me up this morning. Of course, my half-asleep brain ran through several unlikely possiblities before even thinking about an earthquake (Ghosts shaking my bed, people below me having very enthusiastic sex, nuclear weapons attack, someone with an industrial jackhammer going on the roof, me going mad, etc.)
