Aftershocks from quake expected to diminish

A Southern Illinois geologist says there could be some minor aftershocks following Friday’s early morning earthquake.
Nicholas Pinter of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, said Friday afternoon that the area where quake was centered, near West Salem in the Wabash Seismic zone is a spot of “historical earthquake activity.”
“This is the largest in several decades but, geologically, it’s what we expect to happen in that area,” he said, of the quake which registered 5.2 on the Richter scale.
A handful of smaller aftershocks have rattled around the region none bigger than a 4.2, which hit at about 10:14 this morning. Pinter said he expects the size of any aftershocks will to continue to diminish.

Yup. They’ve got brick houses over there. A strong-enough quake, and everyone has a load of bricks fall on their heads.

I felt the quake clearly in West Lafayette, IN. The p-wave and s-wave were clearly separate… it shook everything up and down in my lab and then swayed back and forth.

And to think that all my Midwestern relatives worried about me moving to California because it had earthquakes… Hope everyone is OK over there.

Dammit, why am I in NJ?

  5. Domenic says on :

Ironic, right? I moved to California for an internship. My family was concerned over a magnitude 4.2 quake in a building designed to handle 7+. Then today, one quake over 5.0 and one over 4.0 with no earthquake building codes.Who should really be scared? ;-)

Yeah I felt it in my lab too, but not wave separation. Champaign, IL btw. Not used to this kind of fun…

Western Midwest, anyway. As far as I know we didn’t get any of the aftershock, and I’m in Ohio.
