Who else besides Tiger, Phil?

2008 masters

Recent history suggests that Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson will be heavily involved in deciding who wins the Masters Tournament, which begins today in Augusta, Ga.
Between them, the top two players in the world golf rankings have combined to win five of the last seven titles at Augusta National Golf Club. Woods, the world’s top-ranked golfer, has won four Masters titles, the most recent in 2005. Mickelson, the No. 2 player in the world rankings, won green jackets in 2004 and 2006.
But neither prevailed last year, when Zach Johnson beat long odds to claim the first major title of his PGA Tour career. If someone follows in Johnson’s footsteps this week, leaving Tiger and Phil out of the title picture, who might that be?

Why he could contend in 2008 Masters: A three-time major champion, Els broke a four-year victory drought at PGA Tour events March 2 by winning the Honda Classic.
What he’s saying: “I am 38, and I can quite easily go and… build golf courses. But I really still want to achieve a lot in the game. I still want to win a lot. Obviously, to win [on the PGA Tour] is really my goal.”

Best Masters finish: T-16, in 2006
Why he could contend in 2008 Masters: Ogilvy, the 2006 U.S. Open champ, has finished first (WGC-CA Championship) and second (Houston Open) in his last two starts. His victory at the WGC-CA Championship ended Tiger Woods’ five-event winning streak in PGA Tour events.
What he’s saying: “It’s pretty nice to come in in front of [Woods], ending the streak. I’m very glad I did it. I really feel like I [improved] this off-season… and feel like I’m playing pretty good.”
