Don't drink and drive this St. Patrick's Day weekend
Historically speaking, the largest party day in the Pittsburg area is St. Patrick's Day. The holiday will turn into a three-day event this weekend, with many celebrating on Saturday and festivities certain to continue through Monday.
Unfortunately, this time of year is also known for unhealthy binge drinking, emergency room visits and deadly automobile crashes.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol's Web site, three of seven traffic fatalities that occurred in Kansas on St. Patrick's Day 2005 were alcohol-related. There were 585 total crashes resulting in seven fatalities and 209 injuries during St. Patrick’s Day 2005. Of those crashes, 42 involved alcohol, resulting in three deaths and 19 injuries.
There is nothing wrong with having a good time this St. Patrick's Day weekend. But drunk driving is unacceptable. Be sure to either designate a driver, stay sober, or stay home. Risking your life and the lives of others is not worth it.
