Virginia definitely doesn’t know how to handle this type of weather, let alone do Virginia drivers know how to drive. Being from Indiana, it cracks me up to see places of business closing down because the weather report says there’s a chance of snow. People need to slow down and remember what driver’s ed taught them, it’ll save lives.

The problem is that Virginia does not know how to handle winter weather. It’s not just highways. “It was a perfect storm at a perfect time…”? Gimme a break. Just own up to not having enough DOT trucks, and to not having an efficient plan when snow/ice falls. There certainly are plenty of other states that deal with snow/ice every year, yet they don’t seem to have these issues. It’s amazing really.

The people would have no control over a worldwide government. Most of the happiest countries in the world have populations under 10 million people, partially because Democracy works best on a small scale. There would be a worldwide oligarchy if all nations had to give up their sovereignty to one world government. It’s a bad idea.
You’ll get no argument here that China has terrible sweatshops. I was just talking about how, in an economical sense, these sanctions might hurt the EU more than the US or China.Oh, and I like all the downmods. (not directed to you, voeslauer)
India and the EU are two democratic political bodies that seem to work pretty well. And are elected by quite a few more than 10 million people. So democracy can work on a large scale. And at that moment it seems that the model we have right now is failing to fix global problems. Global challenges (like climate change) need global governance that is more efficient (and more democratic) than the UN.
They would be blocked by the World Trade Organization. Environmental tariffs are permissible under WTO rules, social ones are not.Besides, the EU countries can’t even agree between themselves on appropriate labour standards. The UK, for example, has far weaker worker-protection rules than most continental Europe. Many of the x-communist countries have laws that sound good in theory, but are not followed in practice.
My solution is laissez faire, as usual.
For most essentials like food and machinery, sure. But when it comes to tech things (computers, products like games and movies, smaller devices like ipods, etc) the EU would find itself with GREATLY inflated costs due to the sudden change in import price because of sanctions and tariffs applied to US and Chine (China especially). Some of those products might disappear entirely if those companies don’t currently have factories in the EU. And building them might not be economical if the sanctions are only temporary.
Because tariffs always hurt the consumers and only protect some producers in the country they operate, politicians can’t just say “we’re gonna protect this or that industry for our friends”. That would be too obvious. So it’s usually to protect the environment, the wild life and so on.It’s just that, up to now, no lobby powerful enough has an interest in preventing cheap chinese goods from entering EU. But if they start to compete with our core industries (which is a matter of years maybe), don’t worry, the EU politicians will all turn into mother Teresas to defend the poor and the oppressed.
Awesome someone finally presents the real facts in the case… There is NO evidence to prove that we have any effect on the climate, of course pollution is bad we all agree on that, but its effects on the atmosphere are not well known at all. For all we know this is a natural warming period…
Ah, Nestle, good example. 68% of Nestle’s sales are outside of the EU. At the same time Remember711 is modded up the saying that the EU doesn’t need exports.
Yes, well I guess what might happen is that the EU adds a global warming tax to all products imported from countries that don’t care about the Kyoto protocol. This would basically even out the economic incentive for European companies to move production outside of the EU’s influence so as to curb green house taxes.I read that EU companies have a lead in Green technology, so when global warming actually gets serious the EU’s economy will be hit less hard.
to make ice into water, the bonds that hold the molecules together in the form of ice have to be broken. this is an endothermic reaction. which cools the stuff around it, just an idea
The sad thing is that anyone can lead themselves to believe that billions upon billions of tons of CO2 being released into the atmosphere can have no effect. It is basic science, and Stephen Hawking was correct when he said that the Earth could become like Venus if we don’t stop this madness.
Mod parent up. The downmodders don’t seem to be living in Europe and still consider it a socialist paradise? I like your romantic view, but it does no longer exist. All those so called socialist political leaders are just mass psychology players, like Tony Blair, serving other interests.Really, Brussels has a very bad name in Europe (not the city, the parliament) and is a undemocratic nest of corruption and scandals, serving corporate interests. It’s a dumping place for local governments where the not so able enrich themselves with huge wages and by fraud expenses. The only solutions they ever came up with to “solve” problems was to increase taxes. Traffic problem? Increase taxes. Energy problem? Increase taxes. Polution problem? Increase taxes. Crime problem? Etc. In my country, everybody pays a green tax (which does nothing except that people pay more), except the heavily polluting industries, who support the politicians and the ever expanding government.I’m convinced that pulling carbon based energy from the ground and burning it on a global level for many decades, is not good for the environment. I’m also convinced the government is using that fact to steal more money from the population. The second last time I could vote for expansion of EU laws and power, the people voted against. They promised to change and let us vote again. They changed 2%, and didn’t let us vote again. Because otherwise, the people would have voted no. How democratic. The EU now has much more power.
